Christmas is such a wonderful time of year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, to spend time with people you love, that during the hustle and bustle you don’t always get to time for during the year. Lot’s of festive food and traditions to look forward to. To see the magic in our children’s eyes, it lets you take a step back and appreciate all the little things in life. Everyone celebrates Christmas differently, but in the end it’s all about being with the ones you love. We wanted to share some of our favourite things we like to do this time of year…
Christmas for our family is always so busy and exciting, kinda like the rest of the year, so why change things up? Tiago and I have a wonderful blended family so we don’t have all the kids together at the same time. This year we will all be together on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve we go to Tiago’s Mom’s house (Vavo) for the evening and over fill ourselves with Portuguese cuisine like Octopus, Cod fish, Seafood, and more fish!!!! I’m not even joking! There is always WAY too much food! Vavo treats me like a queen and always makes my favourite pork and potato dish because I am unfortunately not a fan of fish. Everyone thinks I’m crazy because normally people are drooling over the food while I sit there and fill my face with my fave. I just can’t get over the texture and the fact that when you eat octopus, you eat the while tentacle. EEK! This evening we include a small celebration for Tiago’s late father. His birthday is December 24th so we always remember him that evening.
Christmas Day we spend the day at home. This will be our last Christmas in our home because we are moving and Easton’s FIRST Christmas so this year will be a little extra special for us. My whole side of the family comes over and this year on the menu is deep friend turkey; courtesy of my Uncle Jim, a honey glazed ham, gratin layered potatoes, Stuffing, cold broccoli salad, green beans, carrots and for dessert my Grandma will make something delicious. MMMM…I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. You may be starting to see the trend here, Christmas for us is being surrounded by family and enjoying a nice meal together. No matter where we are in the world or what we do we always make time over the Holiday’s to get together. I love that about Christmas.
We have a Flocked Christmas tree with an array of decorations, mostly neutral tones with a pop of red. My Mom always gets the kids their own special ornament every year so they are starting to have quite the collection and therefor the tree is filling up. We choose to have an artificial one because I love the smell of pine but I don’t love the rest of all that comes to having a real tree. Aaaaand…. I can’t bring myself to go to a tree farm, choose a beautiful tree that has been growing for years and then just cut it down, decorate it, water it with gingerale and throw it to the curb January 1st. Maybe one year we will have one but for now I love my flocked artificial one.
This will be my first Christmas home with my family in 10 years and I couldn’t be happier about that. I have had the privilege to travel with my husband though his hockey career and since Hockey is a winter sport we spent all of our Christmas’s overseas with our little hockey families. I wouldn’t change that for the world! We had some amazing memories with some of my favourite people that are still part of my life, even though we all live miles apart. We always missed our families back home so I am happy to be able to spend this Christmas with them this year and the years to come.
This year we are starting fresh being in Canada, in our family home for the first time. We literally had NO decorations, but to me that was ok, I was excited to buy all new and create a new colour scheme for my tree and decor….. all white of course lol. I mean, I tried with the Scandinavian look but my 6 year old is not having it at all! HAHA. We’ve added some colour, hence the bright blue tree in Sully’s bedroom! My husband has taken on the task of making a hockey rink in our backyard, my son is beyond excited, we are hoping this is something we can continue to do every year. We are lucky to have a couple small hills in our yard as well since it’s been snowing and it’s seen a few sleds 🙂 There is nothing better then a winter wonderland in your own backyard!
We have a lot going on this year, we are expecting our second child in a few weeks and are in the middle of getting ready for a major renovation to our home. The most important thing for my husband and I is to make every Christmas as magical and special for our family, no matter where we are. This year we are excited to be able to spend it with family, wake up in our home on Christmas morning and continue to make new traditions!
We hope that you and your family have a very Merry Christmas! We would love to hear about your family traditions so comment below.
